Make your own foaming soap for pennies!

Foaming soap...awesome stuff, but too expensive. Foaming soap has been proven to be more effective for hand washing, as it covers more surface area of the hand, increasing the likelihood that one will wash more of the hand vs. liquid soap which just tends to get localized to one spot on the hand...unless you are just a super hand washer! For kiddos, the foaming soap is fun, and also something that they are more eager to spread all over their hands. It's an instant gratification for them-it's foaming straight away, no need to rub to get foam like with traditional soaps.

Educational piece aside, frugal point now...Foam soap is expensive. If you get designed soaps, like Bath and Body works, you can easily pay $5 each. Foam soap from your every day brands run around $2. Call me cheap, but that's just too much money. I figure out how to make my own for pennies.Gather round as I'm about to enlighten you to the frugal side.

To start, this is what you'll need:
  • A foaming pump bottle (I bought a foaming soap, happily used it knowing when it was all gone, I would make my own)
  • Any liquid soap-antibacterial soap that has the little beads in it, like the antibacterial soap from bath and body works, will NOT work
  • Some water
  • A happy helper to shake your bottle of soap
Step 1: Have an empty foaming bottle ready and some soap you'd like to use
Notice the level on the softsoap bottle...compare it to the next picture

Step 2: Fill the foaming bottle a bit...there is no real measure here, just eyeball it.

I used about a fourth of the bottle? It doesn't have to be an exact amount.

Step 3: Add warm water
Step 4: Have your happy helper shake a bit. Let it sit about 5 mins and shake again. And viola! You should have foaming soap!
Proof that it foams and just isn't purple liquid!

Now for the frugal money lesson...*IF* I paid retail for the softsoap, it would have been around $1.50 If I had a foaming soap from fancy places, it would be around $5. I used about 1/4 of a bottle, making the cost of my refill 37 cents. But I know I got this particular bottle of soap on clearance, with a coupon for 25 cents. Now my refill has cost 6, yes s.i.x cents. :) Even if your refill was a full price refill, it is SO much cheaper, and more environmentally friendly to do it this way!

I plan on blogging about making your own cleaning products and laundry soaps. Let me know what else you'd like to learn how to make!

Frugal Pets-ways to take care of your pet for less

Kitty and I have quite the zoo. We have two pugs, Zoey and Potato, as well as two cats, Spooky and Kate. Taking care of the animals can be expensive, especially in respect to food and treats. I have done what I can to get things on clearance for the dear critters, but sometimes I find it cheaper, and more fun to make things myself. Here are some of the awesome things I've done for my little fur children.
Potato in her homemade costume...but that's a blog for another day.

Puggy Pops
-This is a simple recipe using stuff from around the house to make little treats for a hot summer day.
You will need:
  • A quart of juice
  • A banana
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
All you have to do is mix the ingredients together, freeze and viola! Fancy treats for your canine or human friends.
*For a fancy flare, I make mine into fun ice cube trays, like hearts
Zoey, the best pug ever

Barkin' Good Treats
-These are some easy to make treats your pet will like if they enjoy a crunchy treat. Sadly I can't make these for Zoey as she's aged and missing a bunch of teeth. Potato much enjoys them though!

What you'll need is:
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup applesauce (flavoured or not)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter (crunchy or regular)
  • 3/4 cup regular flour
  • 3/4 cup oats
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
To bake:
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Mix liquid ingredients together well.
  • Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients bowl and mix until smooth.
  • Roll into a ball; place ball on floured surface. Roll out to 1/2" thickness. Cut into desired shapes
  • Place on un-greased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 20 minutes
You *must* put something down, like flour or parchment paper or this will stick and not roll out. I floured my hands to roll out, as my rolling pin got stuck. But I like working with my hands. If you like your rolling pin and are better versed in the rolling pin arts, go for it.

These treats will last for awhile, but not forever as they don't have any preservatives in them. Freeze any extra.

All my furbabies...it's called 'fur'niture for a reason!

My last frugal idea for now...was a genius idea for a pet bed. Pet beds are WAY too much money, I think. I had a great idea. With a yard or so of fabric and an old pillow, I was able to make a bed all the pets love.

If you don't sew, no problem. Just get two pieces of fleece, cut about 2 inches larger than the pillow, cut strips around it, place another fleece on top with matching strips and tie them together. Another bonus to this bed, it's easy to wash! Of course, my favourite detergent to wash my pet things in is Rockin' Green!

Zoey and her friend Rosie, the Puggle on the thrifty pet bed

What frugal things do you do to help keep the cost of caring for your pets down?

Cloth Diaper Calculator-Watch the savings add up!

You'll hear a lot of debate over if cloth diapering really saves money or not. This simple tool can show you how much you'll save over cloth diapering.

I spent about $150 on diapers for Kitty. I looked around for the best deals, started with a small stash and washed them more often until I could afford to buy more and build a bigger stash. On average, a disposable diaper takes 500 years or longer to break down. They are the third most abundant item in landfills.

Comparing cloth diapers

I've had several requests to know the difference between Grape Apple and Sunbaby Diapers. They are an affordable to more pricey cloth diapers such as Fuzzibunz, Swaddlebees and Happy Heinys. I have all of them and like certain things about each. This post is specifically about the overseas Diapers, GrapeApple and Sunbaby. These diapers are between $6 and $7 each, but take about 20 days to arrive as they come from overseas.
Grape Apple Diaper-Velour

Sunbaby Diaper, silky fabric
I like either fabric. I don't need them to be silky or minky. They are both pocket diapers. The GrapeApple diaper is much more soft inside, as the liner is thicker. It also stains easier.
Size comparison-not much difference
The Sunbaby diaper has a bit more to the rise/tab section. Other than that, there isn't much difference in size.
Snaps on Grape Apple Diaper
This diaper only has one row of snaps. This fits more like a Happy Heiny would.

Snaps on Sunbaby Diaper
This one has two rows of snaps, like Fuzzibunz, etc.

Other questions? Let me know. I'm happy to review/compare the diapers I have-Fuzzibunz, Happy Heiny, Swaddlebee, Lotus Bumz, Grape Apple, Sunbaby, Bumkins, Sew is your Baby.

Clearance Cloth Diapers

My friend Alison who made these lovely cloth wipes...has asked about what deals I knew of for cloth diapers. I have several cloth diaper recommendations that I have tried on Kitty and have been quiet pleased with.
My fabulous wipes from Trade from Scratch

Grape Apple
It is a velour diaper, super soft and fits my husky 25 pound baby well. They are super cheap if you buy in bulk, 10 or more will cost.....
You can also buy them on at a time for about $6 a piece. They take about 20 or so days to arrive as they are coming from overseas.

Sunbaby Diaper
These diapers fit well. I love the super cute prints. They are a little thinner than the grape apple diapers and a little less covering, but overall, they still fit well. They are $6 each, and you can choose the package you get. They also offer a slimmer cut for slender babies. If you have a slender baby, order size 1. For fatty babies like mine, get size 2. They take about 20 days to arrive as they come from overseas.
Looking dapper in his Bumkin diaper

Bumkins has super cute diaper covers on clearance for 75% off. I have several that I use for naps and car trips. I just put a regular liner and a hemp liner. Prefolds would work as well.

Three additional sites I found with cloth diaper clearance... Swaddlebees and Nicki's Diapers and CottonBabies
Kitty looking fancy in his Swaddlebee diaper with his friend Zoey

Want to see how much cloth diapering can save you? Saving green makes you a lucky duck
